The effectcs of pure Stichopus variegatus Semper and Morinda citrofolia extract on reserpine induced gastric ulcer were compared to the natural healing process. This study was done in three stages, the first was to study the natural healing stages, followed by the healing stages with the ingestion of S. variegatus and Morinda citrofolia extracts. Each study group consists of 14 Sprague Dawley rats, given intraperitoneal injection of 10 mg/kg reserpine for three consecutive days to induce gastric ulcer. The subjects later were treated with 0.5ml (150 mg/ml) of S. variegatus extract and water ad libitum., 175ml/kg of Morinda citrofolia extract and water ad libitium and the last group was given water ad libitum only. The rats were sacrificed on the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th day of the study and macroscopic and histological observations were made. The results have shown some remarkable findings. Scar tissue formations were seen in the rats treated wit h M. citrofolia on the 9th day of treatment, day 12 in rats treated with Stichopus variegatus and day 13 for the rats which healed naturally. This suggests that pure Stichopus variegatus Semper and Morinda citrofolia extracts accelerate the healing process of gastric ulcers.
