Optimization of hen housing conditions and its effect on productivity, egg quality and economic efficiency of layer husbandry
2009
Krawczyk, J.,Instytut Zootechniki, Krakow (Poland)
All the factors for optimized housing conditions, applied in accordance with EU animal welfare regulations, were found to decrease egg production efficiency and increase the costs. Layer-friendly housing systems are characterized by lower productivity or unfavorable distribution of fixed costs in the structure of total costs, due to the lower number of eggs per m2 area. The best production results of caged hens and direct relationship between flock productivity and profitability of egg production warrant the widespread application of this housing system for intensive production eggs and prove right fears that egg production in Poland will suffer a dramatic decline once the restrictive Directive 1999/74/EC comes into force after 1 January 2012
