Influence of humoral and cellular immune reaction of mare mammary gland on foal health and gain was investigated on 5 Thoroughbred, 4 Warmblood and 8 Standardbred and Serbian Standardbred, totally 17 mares and their newborn foals. All mares were covered during the spring and foals delived from February till May. All mares were clinically examined in detail at the 10th month of pregnancy and later 7-15 days prior the expected date of foaling, than on the foaling day when blood samples for biochemical evaluations were collected. Immediately after the delivery samples of colostrum were collected from each mare. Neonatal foals were examined and foal blood was sampled for haematological and biochemical evaluations. Samples of colostrum/milk from mares and foal blood were collected each day during the first week after the foaling. Minimal gamma-globulin concentration, low total protein and high albumin/globulin ratio was established in all foal blood samples obtained before drinking of colostrum. The largest increase in gamma-globulin concentration in foal blood was established 24 hours after beginning of suckling and the increasing tendency continued during the next few days. The sufficient transfer of immunoglobulin via colostrum was observed in 82.35; of foals controlled while in 17.65; of foals the colostrum transfer was insufficient. Foals with impaired transfer of colostrum antibodies developed constipation (3 cases) and diarrhoea (1 case) and their weight gain was impaired. Average daily gain in foals within first week after birth was 1.226 kg.
