At the initiative of the Mountaineering Association of Serbia and the Mountaineering Club Kamena Gora from Prijepolje, as well as on the basis of the already known undisputable facts about the natural values of the Sopotnica River, its source area and numerous waterfalls and cascades, and its constant presence in the media where the value of the natural environs of the Sopotnica River in the territory of the namesake village has been pointed to from a number of aspects, the Serbian Nature Protection Institute first handed down the Decision on preliminary protection (No. 03-635/2 dated December 28,2000), which was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia No. 11/01 dated February 15,2001, and then undertook the field research works and collection of the documentation for elaboration of the Study of the Protection of the Falls of the Sopotnica River with the proposed acts on their protection as a Natural Monument of Outstanding Importance.
