Thin juice from sugar beet processing as medium for bioethanol production

The aims of this study were to investigate the bioethanol production from thin juice as intermediate from sugar beet processing and to compare it with molasses, commonly used feedstock for this production. Thin juice and molasses were applied as fermentation media with a total sugar concentration of 5, 10 and 13% (w/w) in order to investigate the effect of sugar concentration on ethanol yield. The course of fermentation by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was followed through cells number, fermentable sugar, nitrogen and ethanol content. According to the obtained results the highest ethanol content was achieved in fermentation media based on thin juice with starting sugar content 13% (w/w) and it amounted 8.28% (v/v). At same conditions ethanol content in fermentation media based on molasses amounted 8.04 % (v/v). Maximum productivity for cultivation media based on thin juice with starting sugar content 13% (w/w) was achieved at 12 h of fermentation and amounted 2.41 g/cubic dm per h.
