The basic characteristics of urban soils in Novi Sad parks are presented. Due to the high effect of the anthropogenic factor, the soils in Novi Sad parks are considerably changed compared to the natural soils. Therefore, they are determined as deposol. The main physical characteristics of the determined soils, such as textural class and water and air characteristics are favourable. Chemical characteristics indicate the neutral to weak alkaline reaction of the soil solution, as well as the poor supply with humus, and the elevated content of carbonates in the soil. The average contents of lead were 45.86 mg/kg, cadmium 1.23 mg/kg and nickel 25.59 mg/kg. Average content of cadmium in the soils of Novi Sad parks was from 0.8 to 1.84 mg/kg. The above facts point to the need of continuing the research of soils, as part of the environment under the conditions of the enormous increase of human population in the cities such as Novi Sad. This is especially important because of the degradation of the soils in Novi Sad parks and because it is not possible to increase the park area.
