The aim of this paper is to present different methods for characterizing sediments on the basis of metal content, which is used to estimate the risk of sediments on the environment and to compare the information obtained with the given methods. Carska bara (Serbia) sediments is contaminated with the corresponding metal salts, and as such represent a matrix contaminated sediment. Aging of the sediment was used to simulate contaminated sediment disposal. Assessment of the degree of sediment pollution is made on the basis of the Netherlands directives and recommendations of the USEPA. Risk assessment of the contaminated sediment was carried out by the method of extraction of acid-volatile sulphides (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) and sequential extraction of metals from sediment. As a consequence of sediment aging, metals other than cadmium were redistributed from the immobilized into the mobile phase (especially lead, nickel and zinc).
