Results of the water quality monitoring in Krivaja River (Serbia) has shown that is not in low regulated borders for water. Sediment analysis was necessary because sediment has a strong tendency to accumulate and therefore serves as a reservoir for toxic and persistent pollutants of mainly anthropogenic origin. It was found that the sediment from Krivaja, highly contaminated with nickel and mineral oils, and in some locations, the problem is considerably high content of zinc and copper. It was concluded that sediment, can not be used (removing and handling) without special protection measures, and requires the deposit under controlled conditions in accordance with the principles of disabling the spread of pollutants in the environment. Based on existing data about the type and quantity of pollutants in sediments and taking into account the technical possibilities and economic criteria, one of the possible problem solutions of contaminated sediment from Krivaja River is solidification/stabilization treatment.
