Despite the fact that the several decade-long activities towards the establishment of a sufficient number of seed orchards have been involved, forest seeds in these areas are still collected in natural objects. Related to this, after the separation and registration of seed stands and different forest types, it is logical to impose as obligatory the activities in their establishment, maintenance and use-orientation. By pointing out the production of genetic quality of reproductive material through selected stands, in future, measures should be implemented according to the basic planning skills, particularly in the field of genetics and seed science, while respecting the basic principles of silviculture, management, protection, increment, utilisation and other disciplines in forestry. The emphasis in this paper is on the genetic meliorations of seed stands in both a wide and narrow sense, incorporating in them the theoretical knowledge of the process of inheritance, forms of variability, the basis of ontogeny, and population and evolutionary genetics. The implementation of genetic melioration of registered seed stands should be accepted as a step on the path towards modern seed-nursery production, whose results and long-standing work bear fruit only in seed orchards of the second and third generations.
