The influence of Pravastatin on the growth of several plant pathogenic fungi, and on the wheat, tobacco and potato resistance to leaf blotch agent (Stagonospora nodorum (E. Castell. & Germano) Berk.), tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and potato M-virus, respectively, was studied. The Pravastatin was shown to suppress linear growth and reduce pigmentation of St. nodorum, Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc. in Sorokin) Shoem., Alternaria tenuissima (Nees & T. Nees: Fr.) Wiltshire and Colletotrichum atramenta-rium (Berk. & Broome) Taubenh. Treatment of wheat leaves with Pravastatin protected them against St. nodorum. It was first found that the Pravastatin possessed an antiviral activity, viz it decreased the number and size of TMV lesions formed on tobacco leaves (cv. Xanthi), as well as diminished the content of M-virus in naturally infected field. It is concluded that Pravastatin could be used as a promising biopesticide manifesting antiviral and fungicide activity.
