The correlation between the independent variables (soil fertility, location and additional investment effectiveness) on the one side and the dependent variables of sustainable rural development in Russia's north-west regions on the other side has been evaluated, based on the 2000-2008 data. In 2004-2008, potato production decreased by 9.4%, vegetable production – by 10.0%, milk production – by 10.3%, whereas livestock and poultry production increased by 15.5% each, egg production – by 1.7%, beef production decreasing. In total, the demand and supply reduction accompanied by the agricultural imports increase, entailed farmland reduction. The municipal areas classification by income per ha and location confirmed significant location influence on farm income and number of farm types. Noteworthy is, the population in higher income areas tended to increase. The same correlation was remarked for the number of social infrastructure objects. The existing public programs don't encourage rural development in the mentioned regions. Suggestions on sustainable rural development are given, based on the specifics of the local economy.
