Application of volatile oils for control of soil microorganisms

Efficiency of plant volatile oil was tested for soil microbial control. Volatile oils as eugenol, geraniol, galanga oil extract, synthetic citronella, chinese star anise, clove and fennel oil sweet were individually mixed to culture media as poisoned food at concentration of 250 and 500 ppm. The microbial suspensions from cultivated and non-cultivated soils were used as microbial inoculums. Eugenol at concentration of 500 ppm is the most effective substance to control the colony forming of fungi and bacteria from tested soils. Pouring of volatile oil suspension was directly applied on cultivated soil, moreover moisture content was controlled at 50 and 100 percent. The most effective volatile oil to decrease number of soil fungi at 50 percent soil moisture content was geraniol. Whilst at 100 percent moisture content, eugenol illustrated the most powerful to inhibit the microorganism. Additionally with fumigation, volatile oil was investigated in closet bottle at a ratio of 1:3140 (v/v) and containing 45 gram of non cultivated soil, at 2 percent moisture content. Eugenol and geraniol showed the greatest capacity to control of colony forming of soil fungi and bacteria after 20 days incubation.
