Relationships between biomass production and physiological and agronomical characters in sorghum cultivars (sorghum bicolour L. moench) for animal feeds in winter season

The study was conducted to estimate relationship among physiological and agronomical characters viz, number of tillers, leaf area index, SPAD value (an indication of leaf chlorophyll content), forage yielding, dry matter accumulation at different cutting times of 10 cultivars of sorghum bicolour collected in Vietnam and introduced from Japan and Canada in winter season in Gialam district (Red river delta). The plants were sowed at two times as August 20 and September 20, 2008 then 3 time cutting forage including leaves and stems after that grain yield and forage were harvested in spring season, 2009. The nutrient content in leaf and atem were analyzed to evaluate for animal feeds. The result shower that at late season. In winter season most cultivar could be cut three times with highest total forage yielding of 91.4 ton/ ha and grain yield, (2.41 ton/ha). Among local cultivar, S21 cultivar showed the largest both biomass production and grain yield, whereas S34 cultivar showed the largest yielding among introduced cultivar. Biomass production of sorghum was correlated with leaf area index and SPAD value in first cutting time and grain yield harvesting times, whereas it correlated with number of tillers and plant height at the second and third cutting times. Thus, sorghum plant can be cut three times for forage and grain harvesting could be good crop to supply feed for cattle during winter season in North Vietnam.
