A collection of 49 accessions belonging to four species Vicia pannonica L.; Vicia villosa Roth.; Vicia striata L. and Vicia sativa L. of vetch were investigated in the experimental field of Soybean Station. The variety of biological, growth and economic characteristics were studied in these accessions. The data obtained indicated that Pannonian vetch V. pannonica L. had a higher breeding value than the hairy one V. villosa Roth. and may be recommended as an initial material for developing of winter vetch varieties for hay production, green forage or pasture. Pannonian vetch accessions demonstrated a better winter survival and intensive early spring growth, earlier flowering and greater resistance to lodging. Both species had similar chemical composition and forage quality. Four Pannonian vetch genotypes V. pannonica L., including two Bulgarian naturally – growing populations, were selected on the base of biological, morphological and productive characteristics. They all may be used as parents in different breeding programmes. Another Bulgarian vetch population V. striata L. could be directly used as а winter vetch variety. Genotypes of common vetch V. sativa L. possessing high cold resistance were also selected. They are suitable for including in a recurrent breeding scheme for creation wintering common vetch lines in grassfeed direction.
