In course of the research there was realized screening of different varieties of fibre flax (Linum usitatissimum) and oil flax by the yield of seeds, their oil content, and fatty oil composition of oil. The research was realized in 2007-2009 in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus on a breeding trial plot of the Institute of Flax. Soil of the plot was sod-podzolic light loamy, developing on loess-like loam, underlie from the depth 1 m by moraine loam. The humus content did not exceed 2.5%; mobile forms of phosphorous (P2O5) – 210 mg/kg of soil and exchange potassium (K2O) – 250 mg/kg of soil. Preceding crop - barley (Hordeum vulgare). As a result of the research it was revealed that with the yield of'8-10 c/ha oil content in fibre flax seeds varied within 35.8-39.5%. The content of a-linolenic acid in oil was 46.0-59.3% of the total fatty acids. In the oil of some flax varieties the content of individual tocopherols, carotenoids and phytosterols was determined. The varieties for growing for the production оf food linseed oil were recommended. The variety Brestskij, which was characterized by high yield (around 21 c/ha), content of ALA equaled to 61.8-65.1% of the total fatty acids, resistance to diseases and lodging was very promising. The prospects of the production of linseed oil in the Republic of Belarus were discussed.
