Effects of different levels of ME on fattening characteristics on the one _ humped camel in different ages

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of three types of diets on fattening performance of one hump camel. A number of thirty animals were divided into two equal groups (yearling and 2-3 years old) and a complete randomized design with 2×3 factorial arrangement with 5 replicates was used to assess the effect of the three diets including high, medium and low energy content on performance of the camels. Feed intake was recorded daily and animals were weighed every 4 weeks after 16 hours feed restriction. At the end of experiment 18 animals were slaughtered and different parts of carcass were measured. Results for different measurements for yearling and 2-3 years old of camels are as follows: average feed intake (4.03 Kg vs 5.34 Kg) (p0.05), average daily gain (657.79g vs 539.78g) (p0.05), average warm carcass weight (152.29 Kg vs 218.01 Kg), average carcass efficiency (54.36 vs 54.12), average cold carcass weight (144.65 Kg vs 209.92 Kg), average feed conversion ratio (6.19 vs 9.94). Comparison between the two groups revealed that the younger animals showed a better feed conversion ratio as compared to older ones (6.19 vs 9.94). No difference was observed in dry matter intake on the basis of metabolic body weight between the two groups. Feed cost per Kg of body weight gain in yearling animals was significantly (p0.05) lower than that for animals with 2-3 years old.
