Effect of photoperiod on the fibre and follicle characteristics of sheep

This research made to evaluated effect of photoperiod on the fibre and follicle characteristics of three sheep breed. From this view, 40 head ewes and with similar mean of age (21.9±15.58 month) selected accidently and with equal numbers in two trial group during 50 days placed under natural photoperiod (in open environment with 12 hours light and 12 hours dark) and artificial photoperiod (8 hours light and 16 hours dark) with similar diet rations. The achievement results showed that primary follicle density (p0.01) and percent of inactive follicles (p0.05) in sheep with natural photoperiod were lower than artificial photoperiod. Secondary to primary follicle ratio in sheep with natural photoperiod were higher than artificial photoperiod. Photoperiod had not effect on fibers characteristics of sheep with natural photoperiod and artificial photoperiod. Follicles density and secondary follicles density in arkha-merino*moghani sheep were higher than chios and suffolk-moghani sheep (p0.01) and in other cases follicle characteristics did not significant different among breeds. Efficiency, staple length and percent of medullated fibers in suffolk-moghani sheep were higher than chios and arkha-merino*moghani crossbreeds. Mean of diameter in arkha-merino*moghani sheep were lower than chios and suffolk-moghani. Diameter coefficient variation and percent of kemp fibers in chios sheep were higher than suffolk-moghani and arkha-merino*moghani. Percent of true wool fibers in arkha-merino*moghani sheep were higher than chios and suffolk-moghani (p0.01).
