Study on the effects of various planting methods and herbicides on weed control and yield of corn.

This experiment was conducted as a national project from 2005 to 2006 to evaluate the effects of planting methods and herbicides on weeds and yield of corn and also increasing water use efficiency at Dezful and Karadj, I. R. Iran. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with strip plot arrangement of treatments with three replications. Planting method was as vertical factor at four levels consisting: planting of one and two rows of corn on beds and one and two rows of corn in furrows. Application of herbicides was as horizontal factor at six levels consisting: preemergence application of the mixture of atrazine + alachlor at (1 + 4) kg, L/ha and also at 25% reduced rates, preplant application of EPTC at 5 L/ha and also at 25% reduced rate, weedy and weed free checks. Compared to the weedy check, on average, mean total weed density was reduced by application of atrazine + alachlor treatments by 56%, and compared to the planting on beds, it was reduced by 13% in furrow planting. Compared to the weedy check, on average, mean total dry weight of weeds was reduced by application of atrazine + alachlor and EPTC treatments by 64 and 35%, and compared to the planting on beds, it was reduced by 10% in furrow planting. Compared to the weedy check, on average, corn grain yield was increased by application of atrazine + alachlor and EPTC treatments by 29 and 24%, and compared to the furrow planting, it was reduced by 10% by planting on beds. Compared to the planting on beds, water use efficiency was increased by 83% in furrow planting.
