In order to study the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and yield of potato and the relationship between nitrogen application rate and nitrate accumulation in potato varieties, this experiment was conducted in Agricultural Research center of Hamedan in 1998-99. Two potato varieties (Diamant and Marfona) and six nitrogen rates (based on soil analysis) were factorially arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four and three replications in two years respectively. During the growth season, dates of emergence, flowering, tuber formation and complete soil coverage, and in harvest tuber and stem mean number per plant, tuber mean weight and tuber yield were recorded. In second year, after harvest, nitrate rate in tubers was measured. In both years, dates of flowering, tuber formation and complete soil coverage were significantly affected by varieties and nitrogen fertilizer. Dates of flowering and tuber formation were delayed with increasing in nitrogen rate, but complete soil coverage was accelerated. Combined analysis results indicated that tuber and stem mean number per plant were not affected by nitrogen fertilizer but tuber number in varieties was different. The effects of variety and nitrogen fertilizer on tuber. mean weight and yield were significant. Variety X nitrogen fertilizer interaction for all traits was not significant. Nitrate rate of tuber was not affected by variety, but effect of nitrogen was significant.
