An Investigation on Effects of Heat Stress In Wheat.

In order to investigate heat tolerance in wheat accessions of National Plant Gene Bank of IRAN, 4096 wheat accessions were evaluated under normal condition (in Agricultural Research Station of SPII, Karaj) and stressed and normal conditions (in Agricultural Research Station, Ahvaz) during 1998 to 2004. Morphological, agronomical and phenologic characters including : growth type, days to heading, days to flowering, days to maturity, days from heading to maturity, days from flowering to maturity, number of flowers/spikelet, length of spike, plant height, tiller number, number of spike lets/spike, number of seeds/spike, weight of hundred seeds, weight of seeds on 5 spikes, spike density, awnletted of spike, glume colour, glume hairness, sprouting tendency and number of nodes were evaluated according to IBPGR wheat descriptors. Kernel wrinkles and number of seeds/spike were considered as selection criteria for heat tolerance accessions. The tolerance to heat stress was scored between 1 and 9 in accessions under study. Among of 4096 accessions were 102 samples tolerant, 525 samples moderate tolerant, 823 samples moderate susceptible, 561 samples susceptible and 166 samples very susceptible.
