Selection and selfing of early and mid mature lines of grain corn (Zea mays L.)
2011
Khavari Khorasani, Sa`id | Afzali, Hamid
This study was conducted to obtain the early and mid-mature corn inbred lines as parents of suitable corn hybrids in Torogh Station of Khorasan Razavi Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center, Mashhad, Iran in 2009-2010. The evaluated lines include 108 lines (38 S1 and 70 S5 lines) derived from 43 F2 genotypes of early and mid mature exotic corn hybrids. Also, 34 S5 inbred lines were evaluated for common smut at an RCBD with 2 replications and all of inbred were lines infected by artificial inoculation (tip infection) of smut spores in 2009. The evaluated inbred lines in 2009 were 43 S2 lines that evaluated and selfed with 27 elit and commercial inbred lines derived from Maize and forage crops Research Dept. of SPII in 2010. The seeds of each lines were planted in a 5m row line as 75000 plant/ha. The morphological traits like plant height, days to anthesis and silking and also their interval (ASI), physiological maturity time and tolerance to common smut disease in normal and artificial infection. Then the better lines were selected before anthesis and were selfed. Then at maturity phase, the better lines were harvested separately to evaluate at advance breeding programe in order to release the new and proper early and mid mature grain corn hybrids. Furthermore, 31 S6 inbred lines (selected from selfing programe in 2009) were crossed with 2 commercial testers K1263/1 and A679) at two isolated field in 2010 for further studing of preliminary yield comparision on next years.
