Damage assessment of the annual white grub, Cyclocephala lurida (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in corn and soybean.
1994
Rice M.E.
Relative damage to corn and soybean seedlings caused by feeding larvae of Cyclocephala lurida Bland was assessed with plants grown in a greenhouse. Single corn or soybean plants were grown for 27 d under three densities of larvae (three, six, or nine per plant) and an uninfested check. Soybean seedling emergence, dry root weights, total dry weights, or leaf areas were not different among any of the treatments. Corn seedling emergence, dry root weights, total dry weights, or leaf areas were not different among any larval densities except for 1 yr when nine larvae per plant resulted in smaller plants relative to the uninfested plants. This density, however, is several times larger than any that have been observed under field conditions. Results of this 2-yr study strongly suggest that a soil insecticide would not be necessary to protect seedling corn or soybean plants from damage by this insect.
