The human dimension of livestock disease control in small-scale farming systems.

This paper presents a conceptual framework for investigating the relationship between human behaviours and animal disease in smallholder agriculture. The paper begins with a brief introduction to farming systems research (FSR) principles, and with a discussion of FSR concepts that are relevant to animal disease control in the context of overall farm management. It then presents the framework in the form of a systems or flow diagram, and discusses salient features of the framework. These features are illustrated by examples drawn from the work of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) and the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Disease (ILARD) to characterize target populations for immunization against East Coast fever (ECF) in a district of Central Kenya. The paper concludes with a discussion of the utility of the approach for planning and implementing similar animal disease control programmes.
