Studies on the effect of synthetic detergents on green algae (Scenedesmus acutus 276-3a) were determined using 2 types of detergents, ABS1, LAS1 and 2 types of surfactant ABS2 and LAS2 at concentration of 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 mg/l. Algal bioassay were tested in 5 days to study the effects of detergents on algal growth such as biomass (dry weight), chlorophyll a and b content and changes in cell structure. The results indicated that algal growth (dry weight) were higher than the control at concentration 1, 5, 10 and 15 mg/l of ABS1 at 1 and 5 mg/l of LAS1 respectively. However, the chlorophyll contents in algae were found to be lower than the control in all tested concentration. Algal growth and chlorophyll contents of algae in surfactant ABS2 were lower than the control and at concentrations of 40 and 45 mg/l the growth rates of algae were inhibited. The similar results were also observed in experiments with surfactant LAS2. Changes in cell structure of algae in detergent ABS1 were also observed as cytoplasm shrinkage at concentration 40 and 45 mg/l but no changes of cell structure were found in all concentration of LAS1. At a concentration higher than 10 mg/l of surfactant ABS2, loss of cell orgenelles were observed and at 40 and 45 mg/l the chlorophyll contents were destroyed and colony forming were abnormal. In LAS2 experiments the changes in cell structure were observed at concentrations 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 mg/l.
