The occurrence of Penicillium roqueforti in ensiled commodities has been monitored in diagnostic feed samples. In grass silage without visible mould growth and a low pH-value the degree of P. roqueforti infection could be relatively high. In addition silage of sugar beet pulp with a dry matter content of 25 % is often contaminated with P. roqueforti. All isolated strains of P. roqueforti belong to the variety P. roqueforti var. roqueforti. A number of known mycotoxins is produced by this variety such as roquefortins, mycophenolic acid, PR-toxin etc. Physiological parameters leading to mycotoxin production and the possible association of P. roqueforti with certain diseases is discussed.
