Wasserwirtschaftliche Massnahmen zur Bekaempfung des Vogelsterbens infolge Botulismus im Naturschutzgebiet "Wagbachniederung".
1988
Caspary H.J. | Mahler U.
In the 84 ha reed area of the wild life reserve "Wagbachniederung" death of waterfowl caused by the earthbacteria Clostridium botulinum type C occured for the first time in the summer 1981. The reed area is also used as a purification pond for the waste water of neighbouring sugar factory. The environmental conditions causing the explosive increase of Clostridium botulinum are described. The fundamental processes of oxygen depletion and reaeration for the prevailing conditions are explained and quantified. Several counter measures concerning water management are outlined. After their realization, an effective reduction of waste water input into the reed area has been achieved. Since then, no death of waterfowl has been observed anymore. Hence the effectiveness of the counter measures is confirmed.
