Trainers of 25 Thoroughbred (TB) and 25 Standardbred (SB) racehorses were surveyed by interview and questionnaire. Information sought included: the number of times a day the horses were fed; variations that were made to the horses' ration on race day; changes that were made for feeding 2-year-olds, male and female horses; variations for winter and summer; and the main problems encountered. Trainers base feeding their horses on techniques used for generations, but feeding practices appear to have changed recently. Trainers now feed significantly less roughage, increased amounts of commercial mixes and feed less frequently than in previous surveys. The main problems identified included rhabdomyolysis and excitability in racehorses.
