Forty four ewes of the Chios, Karagouniki, Pelagonia and Vlachiki breeds (14, 12, 8 and 10 ewes from each breed, respectively) were randomly allocated into two groups (A and B) having equal number of ewes from each breed. On the 1st and 22nd day of the experiment 2 ml of androstenedione-11-BSA were subcutaneously administered to each ewe of the group A. The ewes of the group B were used as controls. On the 43th day a ram was introduced into both groups for the oestrous detection. Between the 5th and 12th day of the oestrous cycle of each ewe the number of corpora lutea was surgically measured in order to determine the ovulation rate. The number of corpora lutea per ewe was 2.90 and 1.82 in the groups A and B, respectively (P < 0.01), whereas the relative numbers of Chios, Karagouniki, Pelagonia and Vlachiki breeds were 4.43, 1.50, 3.25 and 2.20 in the group A and 2.43, 1.00, 2.50 and 1.40 in the group B, respectively. From the resuls mentioned above it is concluded that active immunization against androstenedione significantly increases the ovulation rate in these local breeds of sheep.
