A trial was carried out in Buin. Metropolitan Region, during 1990/91 season, to evaluate the utility of the unit fruit number per trunk section area, to determine fruit quantity left during thinning of nectarines, Therefore trees cv. Fairlane ten years old, grown on over Pomona rootstock, trained on open vase and planted 5 by 5 meters, were used. Five levels of fruit number per cm of trunk section were established. They were the normal used (2,5 fruits/cm2 of trunk), normal+15%, normal-15%, normal+30%, normal-30%. The manual thinning was realized 60 days after full bloom, 15 days before pit hardening. Evaluations of fruits growing, fruit size and vegetative growth was realized. Was found that while fruit number/cm2 of trunk section decreases, the fruit size increases and an earliest harvest is obtained, the yield efficiency (kg/cm2 of trunk section), increases in relation that the fruit number/cm2 of trunk section does. Furthermore vegetative growth expressed as twigs number or pruned material per cm2 of trunk section is higher on trees with less fruits number/cm2 of trunk section.
