A preliminary study of sites and times of planting on the growth and performance of pomegranate cv. Kabuli (Punica granatum Linn.) was conducted in the highland of Northern Thailand. The results showed that early planting in May gave the best performance by providing the highest growth in stem height and diameter, fresh and dry weight of stem, width and length of leaf, fresh and dry weight of leaf, number and length of root and root distribution when compared to the late planting in November. The best site for planting pomegranate was Inthanon Station (Ban Khun Klang) at elevation 1,306 meters above MSL. giving the best mean height and stem diameter, fresh and dry weight of stem of 25.64, 0.61 centimeters and 165.00, 71.46 grams fresh weight, width and length of leaf of 41.33 grams and 1.43, 4.63 centimeters fresh and dry weight of root 55.67 and 25.17 grams respectively. The second best site of planting was Tung Rao Extension at the elevation of 840 meters above MSL. The Rayal Ang Khang Station (Ban Kob Dong) at the elevation of 1,471 meters above MSL gave poorest results. Results of the late planting in November showed that the Inthanon Station (Ban Khun Klang) gave the best growth when compared to other two sites. Environmental factors affecting growth and development of pomegranate in this study were plant nutrition, light, temperature and duration of rainfall in each site of planting.
