In studies on the occurrence and dispersal of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn., Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in the Federal Republic of Germany emphasis was based on its two pheromone strains (E-strain, Z-strain) as well as on different host plants. Beside maize (Zea mays L.), where damage is of economic importance, common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.) is another frequently infested host plant. Infestation of both hosts was studied from 1982 through 1988 in several locations of our country. Catches by pheromone-baited traps and sampling of larvae revealed that the populations in maize are still spreading, as proved by some new discoveries in Bavaria and South-Hesse. In maize the Z-strain is dominant and the E-strain can be neglected. The northernmost occurrence of the Z-strain is in the Rhine-valley near Bonn. By means of gaschromatography the occurrence of the E-strain in the region of Freiburg and Koblenz was clearly demonstrated. The climatological limits for a possible adaptation of the mugwort-populations to maize are further to be followed.
