Progress in two methods of characterizing and predicting the impact of variable environments on the performance of crops is presented. The first method demonstrates how statistical procedures (multivariate cluster analysis) can be used to assist plant breeders in understanding the pronounced interaction between genotypes and the environment, and the second illustrates the development and use of crop growth simulation models, and their ability to mimic the response of a wheat variety to contrasting soil conditions and management strategies, and statistical techniques for environmental characterization and crop growth models and agroecological characterization are reported.
