Use of different animal manure as a supplement to white potato fertilization in the lowland [Philippines].

Two levels of NPK (140-140-140, 100-100-100 NPK/ha) and three kinds of animal manure (chicken, hog and carabao) at the rate of 10 tons/ha were combined to determine their effect on the growth, yield and cost and return of lowland potato production. Application of 140-140-140 kg NPK/ha alone served as the control. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The different animal manures did not significantly affect the plant survival. The application of 140-140-140 kg NPK/ha + 10 tons chicken manure produced taller plants with larger stems than the control. Number of main stems per plant and percent canopy cover were comparable among treatments. Plots applied with animal manure generally outyielded the control. The yield ranged from 23 to 27 tons/ha. Treatments applied with chicken and carabao manure in both levels of inorganic fertilizers gave comparable yields. However, there was a reduction in yield upon reducing the inorganic fertilizer in the hog manure combination. Marketable tubers represented 90 percent of the total yield which consisted mostly of medium-sized (4.5 - 6.0 cm diameter) tubers. The specific gravity was comparable among treatments and sugar content ranged from 0.10 to 0.17 percent. The application of animal manure gave comparable return on investment (ROI) to the control if the price of manures is considered. However, if manure is available and not bought, a relatively higher ROI is obtained when added to inorganic fertilizer.
