Effect of intertree competition on branch characteristics of Pinus sylvestris families.
1996
Maekinen H.
Differences in branch characteristics were studied among five plus tree families and a control lot (standard stand seed) of young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The number of living branches per tree decreased as competitive stress increased. However, the diameter, length and angle of the branches were related closely to whorl age and stem diameter, i.e. in a whorl of a given age and a given stem diameter the effect of competition on branch dimensions was small. In addition, for most quality characteristics, the differences between families were small.
