Polyfactorial field trials were carried out to study row spacing 90 and 75 cm on tuber yield, dry matter and starch content in potato varieties of the Czech origin The basic variant (B1) was fertilized by commercial fertilizers at a rate of 80 kg N.ha-1 + 52.3 kg P.ha-1 + 132.8 kg K.ha-1. In other variants (B2 and B3) phosphorus and potassium rates uniformly increased (to 78.4 and 199.2 kg.ha-1, respectively). In B2 nitrogen rate increased to 160 kg.ha-1, in B3 only to 120 kg.ha-1, but in the latter case nitrogen fertilizer was incorporated during planting in granular urea, while in B1 and B2 it was incorporated during soil preparation before planting. Phosphorus and potassium together with manure (35 t.ha-1) were applied in autumn. The yield was statistically significantly affected by the year and fertilization. Dry matter content was affected only by the year. It is evident from the results evaluated that basically an identical yield can be expected on an average in row spacing of 90 cm as compared with that in row spacing of 75 cm. Neother difference in dry matter content or starch, nor in yields can be expected. Essentially identical yield was achieved by a nitrogen rate lower by 40 kg.ha-1 compared with the traditional wide-spread fertilization in spring soil preparation.
