Decomposition of waste-sawdust block of shiitake mushroom has been investigated. Urea, manure, activator LD.-1 (microbial activator of Department of Land Development) and the combination of these compounds were added to the waste sawdust and it was fermented in the laboratory at 50 deg. celsius. The C/N ratio, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content were determined at 15 days interval through 60 days. Addition of urea did not affect the decomposition rate, when compared to the control. The addition of manure, activator LD.-1 or urea with activator LD.-1 increased rate of decomposition. Among the tested compounds, manure plus with activator LD.-1 seemed to be the best supplement to decreased the C/N ratio of the compost. The addition of manure, activator LD.-1 and nitrogenous compound plus with activator LD.-1 decreased C/N ratio down to 20:1 within 30 days, this ratio is acceptable for the complete compost. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content in the compost ranged 1.24-1.59, 1.14-1.65 and 0.77-1.0 respectively. The pH was in the range of 0.6-7.55. At 60 days, the sawdust compost of all treatments were brownish-black organic matter without smell. The compost has the quality of a good fertilizer which should be utilizable to plants.
