The purpose of this experiment was to study the influence of feed restriction on semen production and quality. 72 Ross broiler breeder males were studied from 20 to 54 weeks of age. Males were divided into 4 groups: 1) fed 110 g/bird/day; 2) fed 120 g/bird/day; 3) fed 130 g/bird/day; 4) fed ad libitum. Body weight and sperm quality (volume, concentration, % motility and % live cells) were measured. Males were slaughtered at 55 weeks of age, and the abdominal fat and the weight of the testicles were recorded. Groups 2 and 3 produced the largest volume of semen. Semen quality was very similar for groups 1, 2 and 3: the number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate, the % motility and the % live cells were similar in these groups. Group 4 produced a smaller volume of semen, and the number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate was lower than in the other groups; but semen from group 4 had the highest % of motility and live cells.
