The first outbreak of the disease in Italy took place in the Emilia region in 1930. It is presumed that the disease decreased in our as in other countries in Europe in the fifties. A second epidemic outbreak occurred around 1965 in Italy caused by more aggressive strains of the fungus. The present spreading of DED is outlined and commented on. The situation is represented in two graphics. Many are the possibilities of controlling the disease but no one at present is completely effective. Breeding elms resistant to DED seems to offer the best promise. Waiting to start a breeding program the Forest Pathology Centre in Florence is now testing the behaviour of fifteen resistant clones released in America and Holland.
