Generally a lot of pesticides are used for the cultivation of vegetable crops to safeguard the potential yield of the crop. In vivo and in vitro screening experiments were done under Surinamese conditions (weather, soil, etc.). In both the in vivo and in vitro experiments the effectiveness of five pesticides (Belmark; Dipel; Karate; Thiodan and an extract of Neem leafs (Azadirachta indica A. Jus) were tested against the cabbage moth (Plutella xylostella) for the crop cabbage (Brassica oleracea c.v. capitata). Further more the effect of these pesticides on the population dynamics of the caterpillars of the cabbage moth was tested. The results of these experiments were as follows: -the life cicle of the cabbage moth is approximately 26 days; -the tested pesticides don't have the same effectiveness and the pesticide "Thiodan" has the biggest knock down effect; -the period of effectiveness and the perscribed dosage given by the manufacturer differ under Surinamese conditions and that with the results of these experiments the economic damage threshold can be determined for future cultivation cycles of cabbage. Finally we see that for the cultivation of cabbage in practice pesticides are being used in an irresponsible and ineffective manner.
