The occurrence of abortions is relatively frequent among sows on publically owned farms in Vojvodina (Yugoslavia). The number of abortions as opposed to the number of births given by the sows is much higher in litters infected with leptospirosis than in those free from such infections. Numerous bacterial species were detected in the studied litters and pointed out as possible etiological factors of abortion in sows, and Leptospires were the most frequent among them. A high percentage of them were porcine Parvovirus and Aujeszky's virus, thereby indicating that there is a need for virological studies in the etiology of abortions in sows.
