Dielectric moisture measurement of soil cores.

Laboratory and field testing of a field-portable, electric, soil-moisture probe showed that the degree of soil contact with the probe tip significantly influenced the measured dielectric constant and subsequently the calculated moisture content. Careful smoothing of the soil surface improved this soil-probe contact and produced acceptable results. However, this careful soil surface preparation is difficult to implement in the field. Therefore, four probe tip modifications were compared with the standard tips on a controlled rough surface. Results showed that either increasing the size of the center electrode or protruding the center electrode improved the measurement repeatability. Protruding the center electrode by 0.48 cm reduced the standard deviation of moisture measurements on a roughened soil surface from 0.035 to 0.007 m3m-3.
