Fermentative qualities and feeding values of pressed cakesilages of sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor] and their improvement by chemical and biological treatments.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the fermentative qualities and feeding values of the silages prepared from the pressed residues of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench) stems (Experiment 1), and to investigate effects of silage additives such as urea, ammonia (liquid or gas) and yeasts on the feeding values of the pressed cake silage (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, silages were made from whole crop (WC) and stems (S) and their pressed residues (WC-30 and S-30), and the fermentative qualities and feeding values of the silages were compared. The silages showed similar pH values (3.7-3.8). The ratio of volatile basic nitrogen to total nitrogen in S-30 was lower than those in WC, WC-30 and S. In all the silages, lactic and acetic acids were detected as major fermentative organic acids. S-30 contained less total digestible nutrients (TDN) and showed much less dry matter intake (DMI) than WC, WC-30 and S. In Experiment 2, the silages made from pressed residues of stems with or without urea, ammonia and yeasts were examined for fermentative qualities and feeding values. The silage additives showed no significant effects on the fermentative qualities and TDN content of the pressed cake silages, but affected DMI differently. Addition of urea resulted in a decrease in DMI, and addition of ammonia water increased DMI, incubation with yeasts did not influence DMI. TDN in ammonia treatment (ammonia gas 2% in fresh matter) silage was higher 2% then that in control silage.
