To better assess the factors influencing on the volume weight of hay stacks, 24 stacks on 17 farms located in different regions of Switzerland were studied. The results show that the main influencing factors are the stack height, the dry matter content of the wilted hay, the cellulose content and the storing height. Differences due to the storing equipment used - fan or grab - were not confirmed. A high stack together with a low DM content of the wilted hay leads to a higher specific weight of the stack. Feed reserves can be easily estimated by measuring the atmospheric pressure under the stack at running fan at the end of drying.
