The effect of the growth retardants Paclobutrazol and Chlormequat chloride on the height and the development of red colour in the top leaves of poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd) was studied in two glasshouse experiments. The chemicals were applied by foliage spraying or soil drenching to plants of 20 cm or 10 cm high. In both experiments Paclobutrazol gave good results when sprayed at rates of 25, 50 and 100 ppm or drenched at rates of 1, 7 and 2 ppm, reducing the height of the plants by 22-40%, depending on the rate and the plant height at application. Chlormequat chloride did not give good results when applied to 20 cm high plants, whereas it reduced height by 22-27% when applied to 10 cm high plants at 1200 ppm. The development of red colour in the top leaves of poinsettias was not considerably affected by the two chemicals when applied to 20 cm high plants. Applied to 10 cm high plants, Paclobutrazol sprays delayed colour development, Paclobutrazol drenches promoted it and Chlormequat chloride sprays had no effect.
