Around the Rhine falls (Switzerland) most day roosts of Daubenton's bats (Myotis daubentoni) are found in vital hollow beeches and oaks. Most of the trees have a circumference of 30 to 300 cm at about 1.5 m above ground. The roosts open between 50 cm and more than 15 m above ground, most of them at 1 to 5 m. The highest points of the tree hollows used as day roosts are 1 to 170 cm above the roost opening. More than 40 % of all trees with day roosts are not more than 30 m from the forest border line. Trees with day roosts are preferably on slopes facing south to west. The number of available day roosts is likely to be a limiting factor for Daubenton's bat populations, although the available trees in the Rhine fall area seem to be comparatively high in number.
