The influence of seedcoat and cotyledon on the germination of jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) seeds.

The influence of the seedcoat and cotyledon on germination, water absorption and oxygen uptake of jerusalem artichoke seeds was studied using dormant (new seeds) and relatively non dormant seeds (low temperature and wet treated seeds) collected from experimental plot for germ plasm preservation of jerusalem artichoke in Suwon. Germination of seeds which were completely or partially removed from seedcoat beagn earlier and much higher than that of intact seeds. Intact dormant and non dormant seeds did not differ significantly in water absorption during the germination process. Removal of the seedcoat facilitated a significantly more rapid initial water imbibition during germination, howerver differences were not evident in both dormant and non dormant seeds and apparently did not account for differences in germination or for low germination of new seeds. Oxygen utilization by intact, relatively dormant seed was limited significantly by the presence of seedcoat. Removoal of these structures facilitated an immediate, more rapid oxygen utilization. Partial removal of cotyledon showed no effect on the germination of dormant seed and also cotyledon extract had little effect on germination of lettuce seeds and straight growth of etiolated coleoptiles of oat.
