Volatile oils from seventy species of plants were extracted by using petroleum ether and were tested for their attractiveness against the Oriental fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis Hendel. Only extracts from Cymbopogon flexuosus (Nees and Steud) Watts., Boesenbergia sp., Justicia ventricosa Wall., Cymbopogon sp., and Hyptis sauveolens (L.) Poit. attracted male flies. The amount of 0.6 ml. of volatile oils from these plants could attract 26, 20.5, 10, 8.5 and 6.5 per cent of male flies respectively. Methyl eugenol was identified by GC to be the active ingredient that attracted the flies. There was a marked relationship between the number of attracted flies and methyl eugenol contents in volatile oils extracted from these plants. Results of analysis of methyl eugenol contents, using a gas liquid chromatographic method, indicated that the volatile oils in the respective plants were 19, 17, 8, 5.6, 2.2 and 1.2 per cent. Petroleum ether extracts from thirty two species of plants were tested for their repellent activity against the Oriental fruit fly. It was found that extracts of Azadirachta indica var. siamensis Valeton, Ternstroemia japonica Thumb., Cymbopogon citratus Stapf., and Citrus hystrix DC. showed some degrees of repellency of the fly. The LC50 to repellency of the extracts of the above plants were found to be 4.067, 8.150, 316.00 and 479,000 ppm. respectively.
