In 1986-1987, 1987-1988, 1988-1989, a field trial was conducted to study the dependence of winter killing on average of root, weight of root, content of refractometric dry matter and the seed yield followed from this. Four dates of sowing, two levels of nitrogen fertilization with earthing up and non-earthing treatments were investigated in the total number of 16 treatments. The plot was under irrigation. Media - the single-seed variety of fodder beet of intermediary type was used in the trial. The best results were obtained at the root average ranging from 15 to 25 mm weighing 10 to 25 g. The recommended date is August 15 to 20 for the regions of the Southern Slovakia. Earthing up increased wintering even by 14 per cent. The recommended nitrogen aplication rate is 120 kg per ha.
