Alteration in certain physico-chemical characteristics of cervico-vaginal mucus were studied during early heat, mid-heat and late heat of the oestrous cycle, and on days 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 29, and 30 after artificial insemination (AI) of Jersey cows. Decrease in quantity, fibrosity and ferns, but increase in dry matter, yellowish colour and carbohydrate content of cervico-vaginal mucus were positively correlated with pregnancy. Early pregnancy can be diagnosed because the secretion of mucus was 4ml or less during 21-27 days. The mucus had 6% or more dry-matter content during 18-27 days, yellowish dolour during 6-9 days, fibrosity of less than 10 cm during 3-30 days, no ferns during 12-30 days, and carbohydrate content of 120mg/100ml during 1-30 days after AI. The pH of mucus during oestrus and nonoestrus fluctuated widely. Contents of total lipids, phospholipids in the cervico-vaginal mucus of pregnant and nonpregnant cows remained constant during both oestrus and nonoestrus, and as such were of little utility as indicators of heat or early pregnancy in cow.
