As feeding arrestants for the rice striped stem borer, Chilo suppressalis (Walker) Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner formulations, dipel and Thuricide, were tested in the laboratory. Larvae were fed B. thuringiensis incorporated into artificial diet for 48 h after which they were transferred to B. thuringiensis free diet. The relative amount of B. thuringiensis consumed per mg body weight was determined by weighing the larvae and diet. The B. thuringiensis toxins inhibited feeding after an initial dose was consumed. Probit analysis on feeding arrest rather than mortality showed no significant differences in efficacy between the products. These tests provide a laboratory technique to evaluate B. thuringiensis products for stemborer control.
